Karen McCarty

I began my nursing career 43 years ago and continue practicing part time as a pediatric nurse practitioner at Children’s of Alabama. I retired as Professor of Nursing teaching undergraduate through doctoral nursing students at the University of Central Florida, UAB, and the University of Alabama.
Appointed by the Governor and served on the initial Alabama Pediatric Obesity Task Force to improve the health of children in our state. Served as head of UAB undergraduate Community and Public Health courses, coordinating undergraduate nursing student experiences in diverse settings throughout Alabama. Published dozens of peer-reviewed articles in health care provider journals.
Recent Civic experience: Member Childersburg Rescue Team, equestrian division (which serves Wilsonville). Member Wilsonville Fine Arts Club. My husband served as Mayor of Wilsonville for 8 years, and I spent many hours assisting with community and town events.
I support a conservative approach to local government. Taxpayer money should be managed prudently and wisely, utilizing outside grants and monies whenever possible, especially on larger infrastructure projects. Cooperation with other levels of government is critical, particularly on complex issues such as internet service. Additional rules and regulations should generally be avoided, implemented only when clear need arises, and community benefits are clear.Having always wanted farm animals and acreage, I was thrilled to move to Wilsonville in 2006. My small town has my friends, animals, land, and favorite store (Coosa Valley). Wilsonville’s been good to me, and I wish to contribute all I can towards making it even better.
